This is a work in progress and I will continue to update it over time.
I began this guide as something to help my girlfriend get started with CS:GO and I decided to keep it Public for the world to see and help me improve upon it!
It has been curated through a combination of my own experiences in CS and by collecting and consolidating information found in other guides here on the Steam Community in an attempt to assemble the most comprehensive guide I could muster.

Brief summary and objectivesCounter-Strike (officially abbreviated as CS) is a series of multiplayer first-person shooter video games, in which teams of terrorists and counter-terrorists battle to, respectively, perpetrate an act of terror (bombing, hostage-taking) and prevent it (bomb defusal, hostage rescue).
The series began on Windows in 1999 with the first version of Counter-Strike initially released as a modification for Half-Life and designed by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe, before the rights to the game's intellectual property were acquired by Valve Corporation.
, the developers of Half-Life.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, was released in 2012 for Windows, OS X, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
Global Offensive went Free to Play on Steam in 2018.
Basic Team Roles The In-game Leader and Strat CallerWell first of all the in game leader, is the heart of the team; he is in charge of the team and keeping them focused throughout the match and helps adapt in tough situations and come up with different strategies to help secure a win.
Your role for this is to know a lot of call out on the maps and how to properly communicate with your team.
The Entry FraggerThe Entry Fragger is the man that risks it all, and it does exactly as written he pushes the enemy first without exception, this player hs to have fast reactions and great raw aim and recoil control.
This role changes a bit on each side, as on terrorist it is most cursial to help your team secure a round by stretching the enemy team defences and and force roataions and help the team take site as fast as possible.
Getting the first kill of the round especially on site is a big advantage that can cost you the round thats why its so crucial to get the first kill.
"In matchmaking situations there may not be a standout player in your team that is best at getting these first kills on a site or during a set play, it can often simply be anyone who gets the first pick anywhere on the map.
In these situations you do not need to worry about who is getting the entry kills, work with what you have and take each round as it comes.
One thing you can try and exploit though is if you notice your opponents have an overly aggressive player, make a note of where they like to play or push and try catching them off guard.
There is also the opposite of this; by identifying your opponent’s worst player and actively trying to work the places you believe they may be playing each round you can take full advantage of their weakest link and get the opening kill for your team.
The Main AWPer and Secondary AWPer" With its pinpoint accuracy and incredible stopping power the AWP sniper rifle can definitely be a scary weapon to face.
Putting an AWP into the hands of somebody who has practiced with it extensively on each map can be a huge benefit to a team.
The main AWPer is the player in the team who will usually seek to pick up or purchase the AWP rifle ahead of everyone else when either money or the situation allows it.
The secondary AWPer will not actively use the AWP every round but can take up the rifle should the main AWPer die or use one at the same time to change things up every so often.
A good AWPer will not simply hold the same angle or spot 24/7, but will remain mobile within each round and throughout the entire game, seeking to catch people unaware.
Getting an opening pick with an AWP can be massively demoralising for the opposite team and will make anyone near that location wary of the AWP’s presence.
In matchmaking it is likely that there will be somebody on your team who prefers using the AWP.
It may turn out that they are not the best with the rifle or are getting outplayed by an opponent with one; this could lead to other teammates using the AWP too and as such you have to be careful in these situations.
It is rarely a good idea to purchase more than two AWP’s each round, with even two sometimes being a sub optimal choice.
If you are using the AWP and know that somebody else fancies it too it can prove beneficial to let them use it and go with something else yourself.
Remember that losing just a single AWP is not only a large economic disadvantage, but if the enemy team picks it up too then it can hurt your team even more, so use them responsibly.
The Lurker"A lurker will do exactly as the name suggests, they like to take things into their own hands, moving about the map and keeping the enemy on their toes.
With perfect game sense and positioning they are able to flank opponents and get surprise kills.
A good lurker can be a nightmare to play against, as you can never been one hundred percent certain on where or when they are going to pop up.
At the professional level a skilled lurker can single handily win rounds for his team, picking up important frags at important times.
It is definitely possible to encounter somebody who appears to fit this play style in any level of matchmaking.
There are a lot of professional players that people look up to and try to imitate, with the sneaky play style of a lurker appealing to a lot of people.
If you notice that one of your opponents is often off by themselves and you find them flanking your teammates round after round make sure to let everyone know and be extra wary, double check for flanks and peek any tight off-angles they may be hiding round carefully.
A successful lurker is not only able to pick up the kills on unsuspecting opponents but the information itself that comes from the positions they find themselves in can help the team a lot.
It is important to recognise when it is best to stop trying to outflank and outplay the other team and instead simply help out your teammates in a conventional way, when playing in a group of people you don’t know this can really make a difference.
The Support Player"In a team the support player holds everything together and keeps things rolling, by using fantastic game sense and positioning they stay alive as long as possible and provide vital information for their team.
They are also likely to be the ones seen rotating first on the counter-terrorist side and providing back up where it is needed.
It is not a glamorous position by any means and even the professional support players find themselves getting a lot of slack for taking bottom place on the scoreboard each game.
It is important to remember that it is not their role to be carrying the team to victory by dropping thirty and forty kills each game, what they do is much more subtle and as a result often goes unpraised.
The support role is possibly the hardest of all to find, define and replicate in matchmaking games as nobody wants to be at the bottom of the scoreboard.
The level of communication and trust that a professional support player has and provides for their team is simply not attainable with people you don’t know.
You will from time to time however find people playing more slowly and passively than most and not just because they are less confident in their movement and ability.
Sometimes a player will be calling all the information they are getting and be charging as fast as they can to support you in trading out a kill, you could define these as the support players of matchmaking.
The Rifler"The AK-47 and two M4 rifles are arguably the core of the whole game and they play a part of every single match.
A rifler is therefore more of a general term for anybody who is confident in their ability to pick up one of these automatic rifles and comfortably get kills with it.
They are the frag machines, able to win duels, spray across maps, get single taps one after another and generally dominate the gun play in a game.
Because the two primary automatic rifles are the most popular weapons in the game it is generally a good idea to get as confident using them as possible.
Being a solid rifler is never a bad thing, nobody on your team is going to moan at you for only using a rifle every round as they might if you only used an AWP for example.
There are multiple ways to train with rifles and plenty of guides to help you do so effectively.
If your team has somebody who is obviously skilled with the primary weapons it can be a good idea to try and let them trade out kills for you rather than the other way round.
Admitting that a player is better than you and keeping them alive is worth the dent in pride if it means it helps you to secure victory.
Likewise you may notice that the other team has somebody whose raw aim and skill with a rifle is causing your own team problems.
Keep a note of the positions they hold and avoid if possible, or direct your best player to these locations.
Attitude and Teamwork Team communication is very important in cs go in order to win a game.
A bad attitude will not help the team and raging at someone who fails to clutch is not helping at all.
If your teammate fails to clutch or does something stupid DO NOT RAGE at your teammate but respond nicely and calmly and try to inform them where they made mistake and perhaps offer them some manner of how to improve it and in some cases encourage them.
Below are some simple tips for general attitude and teamwork improvement.
Kills don't equal skillStop looking at the scoreboard for kills.
Most of the time, all the players are at a similar or same rank.
Don't assume that player on your team that is 3 and 10 can't pull his own.
Maybe he was watching B site and they've gone A every round forcing him into an impossible 1v4 over and over? Maybe that top fragger got an eco ace and is now sitting high on the scoreboard? That 3 and 10 player might have been the guy that won the 1v1 on pistol round securing 3 rounds for your team.
Quoting frags on the scoreboard as a justification for something you are doing or saying will not help your team win.
Stay positiveIf at any time during the game, you say something negative to a teammate, you've officially helped the other team.
By saying things like "what rank are you" or "why would you do that" you're just making teammates feel bad about themselves, which won't help them be confident in their play.
Say things like "nice try man, next time just play the bomb timer and you'll get it" or "i see you're having trouble at A, why don't you go B for me this round and I'll try to hold that push".
There is no instance in a game when you should ever say anything negative to your teammates.
And stop sighing into your mic when someone makes a mistake.
They know they made a mistake, you don't need to make it obvious.
Simple CommunicationStop talking when you're dead.
Just make a simple call and shut up.
Alt tab out of the game and go on reddit or something.
You're not helping anything by trying to call out where people are.
You're just making it harder for the players playing to concentrate.
Simple calls are things like "2 long A", "bomb down cat", "3 pushed banana 1 is car".
The worst kind of player is the one who turns their mic on to say "damnit this stupid guy gets me every time i hate this game.
Stop Buying at the start of the roundYou have 15 seconds to make a team decision on how to spend your money.
If the whole team has 2.
5-3k and one guy full buys, you either have to A) force, eco, buy or B) half buy, half buy, eco, buy.
You're losing more rounds by forcing one by one and having less full buy rounds per half because of it.
You're not going to ace every round and win the game by yourself.
If you're hard carrying the game, by all means keep doing it, but instead of telling your teammates how bad they are, ask them to smoke cross for you, or pop flash you into main.
It's a hell of a lot easier to win games 5v5 than it is to win them 1v9.
Gamesense Game-sense is a player's ability to sense the current state of the game he or she is in.
An example would be knowing when a CT or T is at which spot on the Map, or knowing when to re-peek a specific position.
Game-sense isn't something you can learn, it comes with experience by playing the game a long time, and from watching or playing with Experienced players, but some basic things can be learned.
Matchmaking Matchmaking is feature available in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive added as part of the October 25, 2012 update.
Searching for a selected game mode is available from Main menu in "Find a Game" or by creating Lobby via "Play with Friends" menu item.
Prime Account MatchmakingPrime Account Matchmaking was added as part of the April 21, 2016 update.
 Players can opt-in to test the Prime account matchmaking by clicking on the More Info button located above the user's profile.
Starting with the June 15, 2016 update, a profile rank of Lieutenant Rank 21 or above is also needed to participate.
To complete the process, a valid phone number must be entered to "upgrade" the player's account to "Prime" status.
Users with Prime accounts will be matched accordingly with other Prime account users.
As part of the Prime account service, only a single account can be registered to a phone number, meaning the player cannot upgrade additional account to Prime status without having a separate phone number or reaching Lieutenant Rank 21.
Currently, Prime status upgrade is available for purchase for $15.
Basically, Matchmaking is ValvE's built-in system for getting you cued into lobbies with other players.
And presumably people who cue with Prime-enabled accounts are more likely to be legit and committed players on main accounts.
Third-Party Matchmaking Services If you are from EU, most people will recommend you to go to Faceit[faceit.
To play with pros you need to qualify for FPL (Fantasy Pro League).
Faceit uses a numerical skill rating system 1-10
You probably saw some NA players such as Moe, Dazed, Stewie2k playing on ESEA[play.
net] There you have ranks from A, B, G, S etc.
Faceit and ESEA are well trusted by the Professional CS players, even hosting Pro League Tournaments.
So you won't have to worry about account security or anything by using their matchmaking services.
These premium matchmaking services offer
Better Anti-Cheat system
Possibility to get scouted to a good team Trolls, cheaters etc receive heftier punishments on these platforms for engaging in suspect activity
Trust factor In the November 13, 2017 update, Trust Factor was implemented for a better matchmaking experience.
Trust Factor is calculated by a number of factors, which include but are not limited to:
Hours spent playing CS:GO and other games
The age of one's Steam account
The frequency of reports issued against your in-game and Steam profiles
Whether one is eligible for Prime etc.
The exact algorithm is not divulged by Valve.
If you insist in using ValvE's built in matchmaking systems, be prepared to encounter their
Trust Factor system.
Trust Factor is always enabled, even when an option to queue exclusively for Prime users is picked.
The system uses the lowest value of TF in a given lobby and then matches with an enemy team around this player's TF.
Nobody knows exactly how it works, but you can find everything in the official post: https://blog.
So, you might've come across this message: Your matchmaking experience will be significantly affected because the Trust Factor of [name] is substantially lower than yours.
This means the following; This person isn't trusted quite as much as you by steam and counter strike.
This doesn't happen out of nowhere, their system is based on several variables and almost always means that this person deserved to get the low trust factor.
I've listed a few variables valve takes into account to calculate your trust factor and how you can adapt these behaviors to improve your Trust Factor Rating.
Things you can change about your in-game behaviorThere are certain things you can change about your in-game behavior that will give you a higher trust factor.
If we are talking about in-game variables concerning your trust factor we are mainly talking about reports.
Being reported, and reporting other people.
Basically, Don't report other people when it's not necessary, and try not to get reported all that much yourself.
Now we all know that sometimes you can't do anything about being reported, but there are of course certain things you can do to not get reported all that much, such as:
Don't be toxic towards your teammates or enemies.
Don't trashtalk your enemies when you kill them/don't swear at your teammates or shoot them.
Get a good looking steam profile.
You can also do overwatch cases to get a higher trust factor.
Things you can change about your behavior on steamAs stated at the start of this guide, Trust factor doesn't only include your ingame, but also outgame behavior.
You can do certain things to higher your trust factor without playing the game.
Play other games
Use the steam market
Join discussions or groups
Trade with other people
Upload your own artwork and screenshots
Improve the looks of your steam profile!
If you want to get a higher trust factor ingame you should try to not get reported as much, or report others, outgame activities, such as writing reviews or trading with other people can also increase your trust factor ingame.
(anything that makes you a positive member of the community)

VAC & Overwatch Systems Valve Anti-CheatValve Anti-Cheat, otherwise known as VAC, is an anti-cheating system released by Valve in 2002.
It was used mainly for multiplayer Steam games, including all main titles of the Counter-Strike series.
When a player is detected cheating in a VAC-Secure server, the player will be marked for cheating and will get banned from VAC servers permanently.
VAC bans are non-negotiable and cannot be removed.
To obtain drops in Global Offensive, it is required to play in a VAC enabled server.
Drops are unavailable in servers that are not secured with VAC.
HistoryWith the first version of VAC, a ban took force almost instantly after being detected, and the cheater had to wait 2 years to have the account un-banned.
Since VAC's second version, cheaters are not banned automatically.
With the second version, Valve instituted a policy of 'delayed bans', the theory being that once a new hack is developed which circumvents the VAC system, it will spread amongst the 'cheating' community - by delaying the initial ban by approximately 3-4 weeks, Valve hopes to identify (and ban) as many cheaters as possible.
Some servers implement a 'vote-kick' or 'vote-ban' system that allows players to vote to kick or ban alleged hackers.
To some players, this human-based system is much more effective than the VAC system.
The idea of a human-run cheat identification system was implemented as the Overwatch system.
Since 2017, Valve has been implementing deep learning systems (known as VACnet) to detect cheaters with more certainty and deliver them to the Overwatch system.
OverwatchTo address the flaws that VAC had, Valve implemented a new program in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive called "Overwatch".
Overwatch aids in identifying suspected cheaters by selecting the most trustworthy players, known as Investigators.
Investigators are given a new menu item which presents the Investigator with the ability to watch demos of suspected cheaters or griefers, dubbed "The Suspect.
" The Investigator gets a limited version of the normal Spectator demo view, with the view being locked to the Suspect's player view and automatically fast-forwarding to the next round when the Suspect dies.
After watching 8 rounds of play, the Investigator decides whether the Suspect is guilty of the accused infraction.
If the collective group of Investigators believe "The Suspect" to be guilty, he or she will be banned from Valve servers (permanently for cheating or a month for griefing).
The Suspect demos available to Investigators are part of an automated process resulting from regular player reporting and test cases for the purpose of normalizing Investigator scores.
To protect player identities, all players, including "The Suspect", will have their names altered into generic names.
Their avatars will be replaced with default T and CT icons.
Chat and voice chat records are unavailable, and name tags for changed weapon names are not visible.
As of the June 10, 2015 update, players who participate in overwatch and submit enough reports also receive XP towards the player's profile rank.
The player will be notified of the reward and receive the reward XP after completing a match on an official server.
RequirementsCriteria to become an Overwatch Investigator are:
150 Wins in MM
At least a Nova 1 rank
At least 350 hours
Age of the account
Number of reports against you
Once you fulfil those requirements then you should have the option to do Overwatch cases.
Doing Overwatch cases not only helps rid the community of hackers but it also increase your trust factor score.
Tips for Overwatch Investigators
Aim Assistance Aim Assistance is fairly easy to spot.
If the cross hair traces the player through walls (most likely walls and aim)
Cross hair flicks and locks into the head from a large distance away
Soft aim, where the cheater have to aim in the vicinity of the head and the software locks it on.
(quite hard to see in the replays but if you slow down the demo to 1/2 speed it is noticeable)
Vision Assistance Quite hard to spot especially with all closet cheaters unless they go full blatant.
Usually vision assistance is accompanied with aim assistance.
Cross hair at the edges of walls where players would appear from, making them having god like reaction times
Looks at walls half the time to see where players are, unless the enemy are running which you can track from the footsteps
Having a pattern to rush site where other teams are rushing
Other External Assistance Easy
e sideways, up a hill, up a stair case, hopping straight but just moving the mouse (bear in mind, that just because they can bhop in MM well does not mean they are cheating)
If the suspect retaliates back by shooting his teammates
Flashing his team mates at spawn a few times in the 8 round demo
Going AFK for more than half the demo
**Spinbotting is all 3 except griefing.
You can pretty much fast forward and do another case if you see the suspect 100% spinbotting.
The more cases completed correctly the more weight your verdict has on the case.
This will help the community or at least help yourself from versing hackers in your matches.
Starting with the October 25, 2012 update, skill groups were introduced to help the player understand how the competitive matchmaking works.
When entering a selected game mode, the matchmaking system will try to place the player with other players around the same skill level.
Players new to the matchmaking mode will not have a skill group.
To keep the game balanced for novice and experienced players, joining a competitive / wingmen mode without a rank will place the player with others with no skill group or a low level skill group.
Additionally, players without a skill group are limited to two competitive matches that result in wins or draws per day until they are placed in a skill group by winning 10 matches to get a rank (or drawing a match after the 9th win).
If a player does not participate in competitive matchmaking for 28 days, the player's skill group will be hidden, and will require the player to win or draw an additional competitive match to be re-placed in a skill group.
To reveal your Competitive skill-grouping you need to play Competitive Matchmaking!Before you start competitive match-making, you should be at least Level 3 (private) to enter the matchmaking system.
The road to Global Elite is paved with cheaters, smurfs, throwers, trolls, salt, rage and Russians.
Service MedalsProfile ranks are different from competitive skill-groupings as they do not track your competitive performance but your time spent participating in both casual and competitive game modes.
Yearly service medals are attained once you reach rank 40.
You will proceed to Prestige your Profile rank and earn a Service medal.
You can prestige your yearly service medals multiple times during its year's play cycle.
Adding a different colored star for each level of prestige.
Cross-hair & View-model Setup Utilize the Steam workshop to customize the layout and appearance of your Cross-hair and View-model.
Simply click on the links below, subscribe to the free workshop items listed, then cue the maps.
They are quite user friendly as they save you the tedium of having to look up and enter console commands for your ch and vm, all you need to do is click to shoot at the GUI options displayed in the map !
Set yourself up a unique Cross-hair of your very own!
Set yourself up with a unique View-model which suits your play-style!
Strafing while in midair gathers velocity if you look in the direction you strafe.
To air strafe you need to hold a strafe key: either A or D.
Do not hold W or forward while strafing.
You move the mouse in the direction you are strafing, move the mouse slow and smooth to get the most out of your strafe.
The smoother your strafe, the more speed you will gain.
Benefits Of Strafing
Gain speed in the air
Faster turns around corners
Make harder competitive jumps and boosts
Get a speed advantage
Move to certain props or bits of map to avoid fall damage
Jumping gives you unpredictability to your movement to avoid enemy fire
Long jump is when you jump longer than normal, in order to do this you will have to learn how to do pre strafe so you can strafe before jumping to gain extra speed and jump longer distances.
To long jump to the left you must press W, A, move your mouse to the left, jump and while you are in the air you can strafe to jump even more distance.
To long jump to the left you will have to do the exact same but you will have to press D instead of A and move your mouse to the right side.
Bunnyhopping or Bhopping is the act of jumping as soon as your player hits the ground to keep your current speed and momentum.
Bunnyhopping correctly can boost the speed of your player to even faster than running with the knife out, but while holding any weapon.
Due to server tick and valve's attempts to remove and or nerf bunnyhopping It is generally inconsistent.
Bunnyhopping utilizes air and ground strafing, which is used to gain speed.
Bunnyhopping in a straight line without strafing will not let you gain any speed but instead will continue with the momentum you had previously to jumping.
In order to hit bhops consistently, many players choose to either bind "MWHEELUP" "+jump" or bind "MWHEELDOWN" "+jump" in console.
If you don't know what the console is you should probably not try this.
This command allows you to jump with the mouse-wheel.
Bunny Hops are essentially a mid-air strafe while jumping exactly as you land and strafing again.
It is important to not press W key while bhopping as it will mess you up and get in the way of you gathering velocity.
You can check the velocity with the console command cl_showpos 1.
Practice your hops
Lining up shots and cross-hair placement is important!
Aim & Reflexes Aim is one the most important things in CS:GO, no matter how great your game-sense is, if you have bad aim you'll miss your shots.
To get better aim you can play Deathmatch, Arms race or utilize aim training maps, which are available on the steam workshop .
This will take some time, but in the end, it will pay off and you will have better aim programmed into your muscle memory.
Each Gun in CS:GO has its very own recoil spray pattern.
Using this map, you can practice those patterns.

Effective use of Utility Items Good knowledge and use of utility items such as smokes, mollys and flashes can help you take or retake sites easily and can be very helpful in a clutch situation.

Binds and Console Commands Console
First, to make a binding, you're going to have to enable your console.
To enable console, go to:

Enable Developer Console (~) [<YES>]
To enable console, press the ~ (or "`") button
on your keyboard, otherwise known as the tilde
It is located above the TAB key.
When you have pressed it, a console should open up.
That's the first step of getting binds up and running!
First off, variable "x", is where you can input key of choice.
So, if you want to find what a key is bound to, type this:
(Replace x with whatever key you want to use.
So, for example,
In console, type : bind e
It will respond with this:
"e" = "+use"
Which, therefore means, that the key e, is the key you will press when you want to USE something.
Another example, is:
typed in console: bind d
responded with : "d" = "+moveright"
So if you want to bind another key to move your player right, you would type this (keep in mind "x" can be replaced with the key you want to use):
bind x "+moveright"

So, a lot of people use scroll wheel to jump, so if you want to do that, do one of these:

Standard Radio Message
"roger" / Affirmative/Roger - short response
"negative" / Negative - short response
"cheer" / Cheer! - combines with "Inspect weapon (+lookatweapon)"
"compliment" / Compliment - combines with "Inspect weapon (+lookatweapon)"
"thanks" / Thanks - combines with "Drop weapon (drop)" (switch to knife to keep your weapon)
Command Radio Message - better to use them as one radio key
"go" / GO! - may be used for rushing
"fallback" / Fall Back - may be used for pointing the sniper position
"sticktog" / Stick Together Team - may be used for attacking as a team
"holdpos" / Hold This Position - may be used for covering bomb as CT
"followme" / Follow Me - may be used for repositioning
Autoexec - Config
Creating an Autoexec or config file
is a useful thing to do, as it pre-loads all your game bindings for you,
saving you the time of tediously typing them in one by one each time!
Right click and make a new text document and name it autoexec.
Open the text document using Notepad ++
Navigate to the "File" tab at the top on the tool bar, and select "Save As"
Select "Save as Type" at the bottom, and select on "All Types"
Select "File Name" and just add the .
cfg prefix to the end, and click "Save"

Type in commands that you want in your autoexec.
Finding your Autoexec and Config Folders
"Call-Outs" are used to communicate with your team where you are, where the enemy is, and everything between.
Please keep in mind that these call-outs will vary by region, team, and version of CS.
It's OK to have different call-outs from what you see here.
These are not some "standard", they are just very common.
Hopefully people use them universally so we can all communicate better in matchmaking.
Below are a few examples of maps and their call-outs.
Some tips for beginners:
Watch pro players stream, learn from them!
Always warm up before attending competitive matches.
Download some training maps
Gather up some buddies, and play together.
This will improve your "game-sense" also.
